This is a unique memoir of a boy coming of age in the 1930's. A fatherless young boy, who feels rejected by the whole universe, refuses to buckle to a horrendous childhood. Johnny Orlando, Jr. is abandoned by his Father at 2, but his neurotic Mom hangs around until he is 6. He and his sister live with 27 aunts, uncles, cousins & 2 grandparents in a house built by his immigrant grandfather in 1924. Regressed by this chaotic environment he fights to get noticed to no avail. Skinny, nerdy, invisible he waves his arms frantically and only attracts derisive laughter. You may initially join in the laughter, not sure if this is a comic or tragic novel, but as Johnny endures you begin to identify with him. Just as Johnny Orlando,Jr. turns 10 & grows an inch, the Japanese bomb Pearl Harbor at end of 1941. Five uncles, his only male role models, are suddenly removed from his life. All of them had been drafted to fight Nazis in Europe. Johnny traces their locations in the newspaper maps and feels he must now be a father to his younger sister. When the war ends his mother returns with a new Stepfather, Hank Chiego. Johnny cannot stand him and has never been able to relate to his Mother. Suzie Orlando is the most intensely defined character of this book. The couple buy a house 20 miles from Rose Point where Johnny, Jr has spent his entire life. The timing could not be worse. Johnny had just entered High School. He is stunned, angry & despairing. After a nightmarish 4 years in High School, Johnny, desperate to get away, impulsively joins the U.S. Air Force 1 day after his graduation. It is the most important decision in his life, because although he is only 17 year old, they were 17 stunted years. Johnny, Jr blossoms in the Air Force both physically & emotionally. Readers will laugh & cry as they root for this classic underdog. If you understand the apostrophe in the title of this zany book you may well do both on the last page.

What was revealing about this book to me was how united everyone in the country was during WWII Today everyone seems to be finding fault with those who don't completely agree with them. I have read books about World War II and loved that movie Saving Private Ryan but this is the first time I have read a book that tells the story of those who were left behind on the home front when the soldiers went off to fight and die.I had no idea so many women worked in war factories making the bombs but it makes sense since most of the men were overseas fighting. In another few years the last veterans of that terrible war will be passing away but so will those who helped win the war by keeping the economy going while at the same time providing their supplies needed for the war effort. One of my favorite parts of the book was when the 18 yr old boy, Tommy Manning was rejected by the Army because of his health. He was so patriotic about helping his country that he went home and no longer wanted to live. Somehow it gave me a better view of how everyone, from the oldest to the youngest, was affected by the war.
Johnny Orlando was my favorite character. He was such an underdog at the beginning of the book but ended up as one of the bravest .
The book was very well written and you will not only enjoy it a lot but will also learn a lot about history of the 30's and 40's.

An easy to read wonderful story which held my interest mainly because of the vivid characterizations and the historical aspects.
For anyone who has wondered what it was like growing up during WW11 from the perspective of someone who actually lived it you will not find a better book.
It is both a specific detailed survival story of the author as a young boy and a portrait of an era when an entire country was trying to survive.
It will make you laugh and cry because while the war was tragic the people who were on the home front were in many chapters extremely bizarre & unpredictable. The description of the day the notice on the radio of V-J day spread thru Johnny's small ethnic town was worth the price of the book. The long deadly war was finally over & the pent up passions exploded.
The war ended and Johnny's life, just 3 months into his first year in High School was about to begin.Johnny's five Uncles would soon be home and Johnny was elated but anxious. Another male, Johnny's new Stepfather ,Hank would also be coming home and Johnny's life would never be the same
The incredibly fateful next 8 years were my favorite part of the book. It brought me back to the angst of the similar period of my own life.
Any book which makes me cry with relief on the last page is one which will stay in my memory for a long time.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It felt so comfortable and real. The descriptive narrative and attention to details made me feel as if I was part of the family. All the inherited "jersey-ism" were familiar and natural. Great piece of work Mr. Olimpio!!
